“Oh?”

“There’s something I need to ask you. Can you come to my cabin?”

“You say Thorn’s cooking?”

“Yes, and it smells wonderful.”

“Where’s your cabin?”

After giving him directions, Buck checked to see if he could make good on his promise of breakfast.

“Jake’s on his way over, and I told him you were cooking. Are you gonna make a liar out of me?”

“You can help,” she said. “I can’t believe how hungry I am.”

“Yes I can,” he said.

She kissed him. “Think maybe we can get our weekend back on track after the meeting with Mr. Huntington?”

“A horseback ride followed by watching the sunset over a bottle of chilled champagne? How’s that sound?”

“And then early to bed after an excellent dinner?”

“You’re reading my mind,” he said.

She kissed him again and then shooed him out of the kitchen. “I’ll take care of breakfast,” she said. “You take over from there.

When Jake arrived, the aroma of bacon and eggs wafted through the door.

“I don’t know who’s doing the cooking, but I think I’m in love,” Jake said as he took a seat at the table.

Thorn poked her head through the door, laughing when she saw Jake’s shiner. Wiping her hands on her apron, she rushed out and gave him a hug.

“You saved my life last night,” she said. “Thank you.”

“I did the best I could. That big jerk almost broke my jaw.”

“You were wonderful,” she said, finally pulling away to return to the kitchen. “Don’t want the biscuits to burn.”

“You okay, Jake?” Buck asked.

“Nothing that a little trip to my dentist won’t fix. What you got?”

“Do you have your topo map with you?”

“I don’t go anyplace without it,” he said. “What’s up?”

“Let’s eat, and then I’d like to take another look at it,” Buck said.

They helped Thorn put the meal on the table, and then Jake held out his hand. “We’ve never met. I’m Jake Huntington.”

“Thorn Little Deer,” she said.

“Thorn’s a state archaeologist and runs the Spiro Archaeological Park. You can call her Dr. Little Deer.”

“Ph.D.? I’m impressed,” Jake said. “Where did you go to school?”

“OU,” she said.

“Wish I’d been so lucky. My parents wanted me to go to the University of Texas. Now, every football season, all my friends either hate me or can’t stop gloating.”

“I thought you went to Duke,” Buck said.

“My master’s degree. Most of my Oklahoma friends disregard it.”

“Sounds like a personal problem,” Buck said.

Jake sprinkled pepper on his scrambled eggs. “That it is,” he said. “I try to be out of town during OU versus Texas weekends. What about you, Thorn? Are you a big football fan?”

“I love going to the games. It’s always crazy and exciting.”

With breakfast eaten and the table cleared, Jake spread his topo map on the table.

“This quadrangle encompasses part of the Ouachita National Forest. The reserve extends into Arkansas and is much larger than just this quad. It’s where our target lies,” he said, pointing.

“Looks rough,” Buck said.

“No roads or even trails. Nothing in the quad has ever been foot-mapped.”

“How large is the area on the map?” Thorn asked.
